Praggnanandhaa wins the Grand Chess Tour 2026

Indian GM Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa won the Grand Chess Tour 2026. In the final match in Saint Louis he beat Fabiano Caruana 15–13, starting the decisive day six points down — and still turned the match around. In the semifinal he overwhelmed Vincent Keymer 9–3.

The semifinal against Keymer entered tour history as the most one-sided playoff series: 9–3 after the opening stretches, and the German who a year earlier beat everyone in freestyle found no answer to the Indian's speed. Caruana led the final 12–6 midway through day two — and what followed, commentators called "the comeback of the decade".

The turnaround came in the blitz series: Pragg won six games in a row, each in a different style — positional pressure, tactical storm, endgame technique. Caruana admitted afterwards he "simply stopped keeping up": the blitz format demands a different type of concentration from classical chess.

The victory made Pragg the first Indian holder of the overall GCT title, closing a historical injustice: Anand, who played tour finals, never won a full season. The Indian press ran editorials about "the year India took everything" — the GCT title was the country's fourth major trophy of the calendar year.

It is the first time an Indian player has taken the overall Grand Chess Tour title.
