About the school’s name
The village of Akori, on the slope of Ararat, is said to stand on the spot where Noah built an altar and planted the first vineyard, and its name was traced back to the Armenian for “he planted the vine”. It is also said that the Chaldeans worshipped the stars from the summit of the mountain, and that three of them followed the Star of Bethlehem to the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
Mount Ararat is a sacred place for Armenians. A Persian legend calls Ararat the cradle of humankind.
The famous marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky depicted Mount Ararat at least ten times. At an exhibition in Paris, asked whether his work included any Armenian scenes, Aivazovsky replied “Here is our Armenia” and led his visitors to the painting “The Descent of Noah from Ararat”.
The territory on which Ararat stands passed from the Armenian SSR (established on 29 November 1920) to Turkey under the 1921 treaties of Moscow and Kars. Legend has it that, in reply to the Turkish government’s protest that the coat of arms of the Armenian SSR showed Ararat, which is not part of Armenia, People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs Chicherin answered: “The flag of Turkey bears a crescent moon, but the Moon is not part of Turkey”.
