FIDE has announced the venue and dates of the World Championship match: Geneva, November 25 – December 15, 2026. Reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju will face Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov.
Geneva won hosting rights against several capitals: the Swiss bid offered a package FIDE could not refuse — the Palace of Nations nearby, hotel infrastructure for delegations and financial guarantees from the canton. The match will be held at the Kongresshaus, a historic hall on the lakeshore.
Both players already had top-level match experience: Gukesh, the Singapore 2024 winner; Sindarov, the Cyprus Candidates triumpher. Their personal history began in children's tournaments: they played each other in junior world championships, and the head-to-head score before the match is nearly level — the rarest of prehistories for a crown duel.
The new prize rule — two hundred thousand dollars for every won game — changes match strategy directly: draws in level positions do not pay, and the organisers count on an aggressive chess scenario. Analysts have already calculated: at maximum wins the winner's prize could exceed one million four hundred thousand.
The match will make history before the first move: both players will be 20 years old when they sit down at the board — the youngest world championship duel ever. Classical format: 14 games, 7½ points needed to win. The prize fund is $2.5 million, with $200,000 for each game won under the new rules.
