After the Olympiad gold: Uzbek stars near the top of the world ratings

The golden Olympiad in Samarkand is over, but its consequences are only unfolding. Two Uzbek grandmasters — Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2780) and Javokhir Sindarov (around 2777) — have cemented their place near the top of the world ratings, and other heroes of the tournament also appear in the top ten. For a country that won its first Olympiad gold just four years ago, this is the result of a whole chess programme, not a one-off victory.

What comes next for the winners? Uzbekistan confirms its main asset is youth. Abdusattorov and Sindarov will continue the season in the Grand Tour and club leagues, where rating points are earned in games against the best players in the world. For Armenia the reference point is clear: the Samarkand experience — five wins in six rounds and a medal fight until the penultimate round — shows the team is on the right path, and the rating of Armenian grandmasters should grow from the event.

The rating list will update in early October — then the exact changes after the Olympiad will become visible: whom the eleven rounds lifted, who lost points against the favourites. For clubs and schools this is a reference too: the names children will see in tournament tables all next season are being formed right now. We follow the updates and will report how the world top has shifted.
