While the chess world was digesting the Samarkand Olympiad, the season’s main calendar story took shape: the World Championship match will be held in Geneva from 25 November to 15 December 2026. Reigning champion D Gukesh (India) defends the crown against Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan) — the Candidates winner and leader of the squad that just took home gold.
The two enter the match in different moods. Sindarov is on a wave: Olympiad gold on home soil, second place in the world rapid rating and confident form all year. Gukesh, on the contrary, has had an uneven season: at the Olympiad itself his results were humbler than a champion’s usual level. The challenger, though, takes the champion’s form out of the equation: “Forget Gukesh’s form — I am preparing for a World Championship match”, Sindarov said in a recent interview. And truly: the history of title matches knows few examples where pre-match tournament form decided anything.
The Geneva match brings together two of the youngest stars of the world elite, and both have just confirmed their level at the Samarkand Olympiad. For Armenia this is the event of the year too: the Uzbek challenger is a long-standing rival of the Armenian teams, and the road to the crown through Sindarov inevitably runs across the Samarkand page of the season. We will run a detailed report from the match: pre-match previews, games of every round and analyses of the key moments.
