After the sensation of round eight, round nine put everything back in place — almost. Uzbekistan beat the US team and lead the table alone again: 14 points, but with a better tiebreak than Germany, which played a more productive game than its former self. Two rounds remain, and the gold medals will be decided in the direct meetings of the leaders.
In round nine Armenia played a holding match: the team remains in the upper half of the table and keeps its theoretical medal chances — for that it needs wins in the remaining rounds and slips from the rivals. The Armenian women lost to China 1-3 — the opponent was stronger on every board that day. Two rounds remain until the end of the event.
The picture before the finish: Uzbekistan and Germany on 14 team points each, then China, Azerbaijan, France and the USA on 13. In the women’s event China are two points clear. The tenth and eleventh rounds remain — 26 and 27 September — and they will decide who carries the gold medals home from Samarkand.
| Standings after 9 rounds | Points |
|---|---|
| Uzbekistan | 14 (sole leader) |
| Germany | 14 (worse tiebreak) |
| China, Azerbaijan, France, USA | 13 each |
| Women: China | leading by 2 points |
What's next. Round ten comes today, 26 September, the final one — tomorrow, the 27th. We are following Armenia and the finishing race.
