Armenia’s hardest match of the event came on the eve of the final: hosts Uzbekistan, unbeaten through ten rounds, beat the Armenian team 3½-½. Shant Sargsyan preserved Armenia’s only half-point, holding a draw against Nodirbek Yakubboev. Today, 27 September, is the final eleventh round.
Uzbekistan came into the match off a 3-1 win over China and did not slow down: three board wins and one draw. India were equally merciless in round ten — 3½-½ against the second Uzbek team — and keep chasing the leader. Armenia went into the match in the leading group with 15 match points, but the medal fight has now become extremely hard for the Armenian team.
In the women’s tournament China continue to lead. The final round is traditionally the most dramatic: the leaders play each other, and the medals are fought for until the very last game. The Olympiad closes this evening; the Uzbek team is one step from a second Olympiad gold (the first came in Chennai 2022).
