League in Bengaluru: Carlsen’s team unbeaten

Season four of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League is under way in Bengaluru (September 5–13): six franchises, each mixing male and female stars. After a dramatic match against Ian Nepomniachtchi’s side, Magnus Carlsen’s Alpine APL Pipers lead as the only unbeaten team. Triveni Continental Kings, PBG Alaskan Knights and Ganges Grandmasters are also in the field.

The league format is unchanged: two teams meet over six boards, with men's and women's points stacking into one table — the mixed scheme that two years ago made the GCL the most television-friendly team product in chess. Every evening the Bengaluru hall fills with schoolchildren clutching autograph books: for local fans, seeing Gukesh, Carlsen or Humpy under one roof rivals a football derby.

The match against Nepomniachtchi's side tested the Pipers' nerve: the classical stretches produced no winner, and in the blitz tie-breaks Carlsen twice outplayed his counterparts on the top boards while the women's half of the team ground out endgame wins. The coaching staff admitted afterwards that squad depth — a grandmaster on every board — is what carries the team through a long event.

Rivals still have time: almost a week remains before the final, and the league's history knows comebacks — last season a team lying fourth at halfway ended up playing the title match. But the Pipers' strategy looks soundest: Carlsen takes his games on the top boards while the young Indian grandmasters in the squad steadily score on the lower boards, where the team margin is decided.
